Notes on a Scorecard - Oct. 13, 1991

Share

It happened at the Rose Bowl Saturday:

6 p.m.--The setting remains lovely, but the stadium has grown old and outmoded. I wonder aloud if UCLA will be tempted to move into the Coliseum after it is renovated and am informed that there are six years remaining on the Bruins’ contract with the Rose Bowl.

6:15--It is noted that UCLA has scored in an NCAA-record 231 consecutive games--and that Arizona receiver coach Mike Flores was the Bruin quarterback when they were shut out the last time in 1971 by Michigan.

6:20--Independence Bowl search committee member Carl Pierson hands out brochures in the press box. He says he is interested in both UCLA and Arizona. As if you didn’t know, the game will be played Dec. 29 in Shreveport, La.

6:30--John Hancock Bowl brochures are distributed. The cover shows former USC quarterback Todd Marinovich getting set to throw against Michigan State last December in El Paso. He must have fond memories of that day.

7:11--The first penalty is called at 0:00 of the first quarter, a personal foul against Arizona after the opening kickoff was downed in the UCLA end zone.

7:12--On the first scrimmage play of this eventful night, Tommy Maddox throws his fifth interception of the year.

7:15--When the Bruins get the ball back, Kevin Williams is the tailback. I guess starter Shawn Wills needed a breather.

7:25--Arizona quarterback Bill Prickett sneaks over from the one-yard line to give Arizona the lead. The walk-on senior is enjoying the greatest game of a career that previously encompassed two series against Cal State Long Beach and one against Washington.

7:34--Williams, who may be the best second-string tailback in the nation, runs 45 yards for a Bruin touchdown.

7:38--Arizona long snapper Chad Ross snaps the ball over punter Adam Grand’s head. The ball travels 39 yards and lands in the end zone for a safety that gives UCLA a 9-7 lead. It is believed to have set a stadium record for longest snap.

7:50--Williams, who has rushed seven times for 88 yards, limps off the field after suffering a leg injury.

8:02--Arizona dips into its 1930 playbook and unveils its secret weapon--the quick kick. On second-and-28, wide receiver Terry Vaughn boots it 60 yards.

8:25--Maddox fires a 16-yard strike to his favorite receiver, Sean LaChapelle, in the end zone.

8:40--Maddox and LaChapelle team up again for a five-yard touchdown.

8:43--The Bruins lead, 33-14, at halftime. There are no complaints about the play calling.

9:00--Halftime statistics show UCLA with two 100-yard rushers. Williams, who returned to the lineup in the middle of the second quarter, has 108 and Wills has 107.

9:25--After a 10-minute stretch of NFL-style, scoreless football, Maddox throws his third touchdown pass, 35 yards to Paul Richardson.

9:41--It’s Maddox and LaChapelle, again, for a 12-yard touchdown. UCLA leads, 47-14, in the final minute of the third quarter. The only question now is whether Terry Donahue will leave Maddox in long enough for him to

throw what would be a school-

record fifth touchdown pass.

9:54--Jim Bonds replaces Maddox early in the fourth quarter. Donahue will not be second-guessed for pouring it on.
