The New Jersey Devils (4-0) are off to the best start in club history after defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins, 4-1, Saturday at New Jersey.

The Devils got goals from Claude Vilgrain, Stephane Richer, Claude Lemieux and Peter Stastny to end the Stanley Cup champions’ three-game unbeaten streak. The Devils outshot the Penguins, 32-17, limiting Pittsburgh to five shots apiece in the first and second periods.

Buffalo 5, Quebec 4--Defenseman Mike Ramsey broke a tie at 11:47 of the third period with a goal that spoiled a three-goal effort by the Nordiques’ Owen Nolan at Quebec.

Ramsey’s shot from the blue line was headed wide of the net when it deflected in off the stick of defenseman Steven Finn. The goal gave the Sabres their first victory of the season after one tie in their first four games.

Donald Audette scored two earlier goals for the Sabres, and Pierre Turgeon and Brad May each had one.

The three goals boosted Nolan’s total to five in Quebec’s first five games, surpassing the three he scored in 59 games last season, his first.

Minnesota 3, Detroit 2--Rookie defenseman Derian Hatcher scored his first NHL goal and the North Stars kept their record perfect with a victory at Minnesota.

Hatcher, the North Stars’ first-round choice in the 1990 entry draft, was playing in his second NHL game as his second period goal gave the North Stars a 3-1 lead.

Chicago 7, Washington 2--Mike Hudson and Steve Thomas scored 1:09 apart in the first period as the Blackhawks handed the Capitals their first loss of the season at Washington.

Hudson and Thomas took advantage of defensive breakdowns to score their first goals of the season as Chicago evened its record at 2-2-1.

N.Y. Islanders 5, Philadelphia 4--Brent Sutter’s power-play goal at 12:19 of the second period broke a tie as the Islanders won their 20th home opener by beating the Flyers.

Sutter scored his fourth goal of the season to break a 4-4 tie. The Islanders scored after Flyer defenseman Terry Carkner received a major penalty and a game misconduct for high-sticking Patrick Flatley.

Montreal 6, Boston 0--Stephan Lebeau scored twice and Patrick Roy got the 14th shutout of his seven-year NHL career to lead the Canadiens at Boston.

The Canadiens drove goalie Andy Moog from the Boston net with a four-goal barrage in the second period that made the score 5-0.

Montreal increased the lead to 6-0 on a goal by Guy Carbonneau 48 seconds into the third period against Moog’s replacement, Matt DelGuidice.

St. Louis 6, San Jose 3--Dave Christian scored his first two goals of the season and Adam Oates added a goal and two assists to lead the Blues, who outshot the Sharks, 44-27, at St. Louis.

The Blues scored four goals in the second period after the Sharks scored the only goal in the first period. The Blues have not scored in the first period in the first four games of the season.

Vancouver 2, Toronto 1--Trevor Linden’s short-handed goal at 10:39 of the third period gave the Canucks a victory at Toronto and kept them in first place in the Smythe Division.

Linden fired a slap shot between goaltender Grant Fuhr’s pads while killing a high-sticking penalty to Sergio Momesso.

Edmonton 3, Calgary 1--Anatoli Semenov and Mark Lamb each had a goal and an assist as the Oilers avoided setting a club mark for early season losses with a victory at Edmonton.

In 1980-81, the Oilers were 1-3-1 after five games. Saturday night’s victory allowed them to equal the 11-year-old mark rather than set a record.
