COUNTYWIDE : Canned-Food Drive Planned Wednesday

The anti-hunger group Food Share has organized a canned-food drive Wednesday in recognition of World Food Day, which has been sanctioned by the United Nations.

Fire stations countywide will accept donations Wednesday on behalf of the El Rio-based agency, which feeds about 89,000 Ventura County residents each month.

“We’re hoping to get in as much food as possible,” said Susan Hixon, Food Share marketing and development officer.

“We’re trying to start things before the holiday season. We get a lot of attention at Thanksgiving and Christmas, but people are hungry throughout the year.”

Food Share is also asking people to encourage the managers of supermarkets to donate to a baby-food drive Wednesday. Hixon noted that it costs $9 a week for a nutritional food package for an American infant, compared with $1,400 for the same period to treat an infant for malnutrition.

All county and municipal fire stations are set up to accept donations, except the volunteer fire company in Fillmore and some remote county stations in the northern backcountry, Hixon said.
