LAGUNA BEACH : Hikers Get Daylong Pass Into Canyon

Share

Hikers will be allowed into a city preserve all day Saturday, offering them the uncommon opportunity to enjoy the wildlife and scenery of Laguna Canyon, one of Orange County’s prime wilderness areas.

The 325-acre area, officially named the Jim Dilley Greenbelt Preserve but also known as Sycamore Hills, contains trails that run past a large freshwater lake. Home to many varieties of waterfowl, the lake is one of three in the area that make up the Laguna Lakes, the only freshwater lakes left in the county.

The trail through the preserve is a loop about 3 miles long, said Elisabeth Brown, president of Laguna Greenbelt, a local environmental group. Hikers will be allowed in from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are urged to bring water and sunscreen.

To reach the area, drive up Laguna Canyon Road from Laguna Beach and park in a small parking lot to the right, about three-quarters of a mile north of El Toro Road.

For those unable to go on Saturday, there will be six more openings during the fall and winter.
