Share

The South Gate High School football team is scheduled to spend Saturday morning removing graffiti at designated locations throughout the city.

The city is providing transportation and equipment for 60 young athletes, who will begin work at 8 a.m. Normally, the team spends most of Saturday at the school reviewing game films, but South Gate has a rare bye Friday night. “This is a good way for us to keep the kids out of trouble,” Assistant Principal Dave Callahan said.

The Whittier Grand Prix bicycle race begins at 7:30 a.m. Sunday in the Uptown commercial area. The one-mile race route is east on Philadelphia Street to Washington Avenue, south to Penn Street, west to Greenleaf Avenue, north to Wardman Street, west to Comstock Avenue, north to Philadelphia and east to the start/finish line at Bright Avenue.

The Legislature has approved $10 million for construction of a multistory physical education building at Cal State Long Beach, but the university needs to raise about $5 million more to add its much-hoped-for basketball arena. Fiscal Director Dan Radakovich said he expects the university to hold a fund-raising drive concurrent with construction of the new facility, which is expected to open in the spring of 1993.
