Customers at Joanie’s restaurant in Camarillo were all smiles Saturday. After all, you have to smile when you’re on “Candid Camera.”

A crew from the King World Productions television show, which catches people in the act of looking silly, dropped in on the Ventura Boulevard diner and filmed six hours of material. The story line for the day: A “patron” (actor Jim Nixon) kept asking other patrons (unsuspecting customers) to taste his food.

Joanie Dehaas, co-owner of the restaurant, said about 15 people, including herself, were caught on camera. She said most took the practical joking in stride.

“They were all willing except the first one who did it. He got upset,” Dehaas said. “He said, ‘I am not going to taste your food and I don’t want you to bother me.’ When he found out it was ‘Candid Camera,’ he was still upset. He would not sign the release.”
