THOUSAND OAKS : 200 Are Expected to Rally, Protest Taxes

Share

More than 200 Ventura County residents are expected to rally Saturday against higher taxes and government waste during Taxpayer’s Action Day in Thousand Oaks, said rally organizer Melinda Wiman.

The rally is part of a nationwide effort by Citizens Against Government Waste, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization based in Washington, D.C., to get information out about local and federal issues, Wiman said.

“The gist of the rally is to get people interested in what’s going on,” Wiman said. “The state has been impacted by higher taxes and heavy regulations. We’d like to turn this around by getting citizens aware and active.”

Wiman said simultaneous rallies will take place in more than 300 communities across the country Saturday. Assemblyman Tom McClintock will be the keynote speaker at the 2 p.m. rally at the Conejo Center at Dover and Hendrix avenues. Several local tax groups will give presentations and answer tax questions, she said.

“It’s more of an information rally than a protest rally,” Wiman said. People can find out about upcoming bills and how to become more active in their community by writing letters to their congressional representatives or attending local council meetings, she said.
