TENNIS ROUNDUP : Stich Rolls Past Patrick McEnroe in 69 Minutes
Michael Stich of Germany dominated Patrick McEnroe, 6-3, 6-4, on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the $250,000 CA Trophy tournament at Vienna.
The top-seeded Stich, who will turn 23 today, will meet Sweden’s Anders Jarryd, the defending champion.
Stich, No. 4 player in the ATP rankings, overpowered McEnroe in 69 minutes. Horst Skoff of Austria beat Patrick Baur of Germany, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.
Fourth-seeded Brad Gilbert advanced to the quarterfinals of the Lyon (France) Grand Prix with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Eric Winogradsky of France.
Kevin Curren moved up by beating Christo Van Rensburg of South Africa, 6-1, 6-2.
Defending champion Mary Joe Fernandez defeated Radka Zrubakova of Czechoslovakia, 6-1, 6-1, and moved into the quarterfinals of the WTA tournament at Filderstadt, Germany. Nathalie Tauziat of France won on a default over Manon Bollegraf of the Netherlands, who pulled out with a foot injury. Tauziat will play top-seeded Martina Navratilova today, when Navratilova turns 35. Navratilova is hoping to tie Chris Evert’s record of 157 tournament victories.
