David Lowery passed for two touchdowns and tailback Wayne Pittman rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns to lead San Diego State to a 28-21 Western Athletic Conference victory Saturday night at El Paso.

San Diego State improved its record to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the WAC. UTEP lost its third consecutive game to fall to 3-4-1 and 1-3-1.

UTEP tied the score, 21-21, with 9:21 remaining in the third quarter when quarterback Mike Perez faked a handoff and threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to split end Glenn Bishop.

But Lowery, who completed 21 of 34 passes for 296 yards and two touchdowns, responded by leading the Aztecs on an 84-yard drive that he capped with a 21-yard touchdown pass to halfback Larry Maxey.

San Diego State had built a 14-0 lead in the first half with touchdown runs of five and four yards by Pittman, who started in place of Marshall Faulk and his backup T.C. Wright, both of whom were injured last week against New Mexico.

Faulk, who set an NCAA single-game rushing record earlier this season, said Saturday that one of his doctors told him that if his fractured rib and cracked rib do not heal, it might be better if Faulk sits out the rest of the season.

Brigham Young 35, Hawaii 18--Ty Detmer passed for three touchdowns and freshman Jamal Willis rushed for two more to lead the Cougars in a WAC game at Provo, Utah.

Detmer, the 1990 Heisman Trophy winner, completed 14 of 20 passes for 225 yards for BYU (4-3, 3-0). Willis gained 82 yards and scored on runs on one yard and 44 yards.

Hawaii (3-4, 2-3) committed two turnovers that BYU converted into touchdowns.

Utah 21, Colorado State 16--Frank Dolce passed for 260 yards and a touchdown to lead the Utes (3-4, 2-2) to a WAC victory at Salt Lake City.

Colorado State (3-4, 2-2) threatened twice in the final minutes.

But Tom Romero fumbled at the Utah 26 with 5:10 left, and Ute cornerback Mark Swanson’s intercepted a pass at the Utah two with 2:43 remaining.

Wyoming 39, New Mexico 19--Sean Fleming kicked four field goals at Albuquerque, N.M., as Wyoming (3-4-1, 1-3-1) handed the Lobos (1-7, 0-4) their 10th consecutive WAC loss.
