SIMI VALLEY : Council Gives Final OK to Planned Mall

The Simi Valley City Council gave final approval Monday to a plan for a proposed regional mall that officials hope will help transform the bedroom community into a self-sufficient city.

The 950,000-square-foot mall is planned for a 129-acre site north of the Simi Valley Freeway, between First Street and Erringer Road. The project will also include another 500,000 square feet of office and commercial space.

In September, the City Council gave tentative approval to the mall. Along with the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library just west of Simi Valley, the mall is considered one of the most significant developments in the city.

The council’s unanimous action Monday changed the zoning of the site from “commercial planned development” to “regional center commercial.”

When completed, the project is expected to raise about $2.7 million for the city in annual revenue. Groundbreaking is scheduled for mid-1993, and opening of the first phase of the mall is planned for late 1995 or early 1996, city officials said.
