San Clemente’s Mike Parsons, the leader on the Professional Surfing Assn. of America tour, can clinch the points championship with at least a fourth-place finish this weekend at the $75,000 Budweiser championships at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach.

More than 200 surfers are expected to compete in the event, the last of 11 stops on the PSAA tour. Qualifying heats for the five-day event begin today, with Parsons and the other top-seeded surfers competing Saturday. The finals are set for 11 a.m. Sunday.

Parsons leads the tour with 6,642 points, followed by fellow San Clemente surfers Shane Beschen (5,960) and Matt Archbold (5,686).

Parsons can clinch the title with a fourth-place finish, or if Beschen and Archbold fail to make the finals.

Parsons, 26, leads the tour in prize money with $18,225. The winner of the Ocean Beach contest will earn $10,000.

If Parsons wins the points title, he also will receive a 1991 Nissan pickup and a trip to Tahiti.
