The San Jose Sharks outhustled, outplayed and outshot Hartford on the road Wednesday night. Thanks to Whaler goalie Kay Whitmore, it still wasn’t enough to win.

Whitmore made 33 saves for his first career shutout as the Whalers won, 3-0, for their fifth victory in a row.

Montreal 3, Quebec 2--Petr Svoboda scored at 3:22 of overtime at Montreal as the Canadiens extended the Nordiques’ winless streak to seven games.

Sylvain Turgeon originally was credited with the game-winner, but an official scoring change after the game gave Svoboda his first goal of the season. The defenseman poked a loose puck past Jacques Cloutier after referee Kerry Fraser waved off a goal for each team.

Winnipeg 3, Detroit 2--Paul MacDermid scored his first goal of the season in the third period at Detroit as the Jets ended the Red Wings’ three-game winning streak.

Washington 6, Edmonton 5--Dmitri Khristich scored on a power play with 2:08 remaining in the third period at Edmonton where the Capitals overcame a four-goal deficit.
