One of the highlights in Ocean View’s disappointing season has been the play of junior linebacker/center/placekicker Mark Wersching. If the last name sounds familiar, it should. Wersching is the nephew of former All-Pro San Francisco 49er kicker Ray Wersching. Wersching’s father, Randy, was a kicker at Cal.

Mark Wersching is following a family tradition. As a sophomore, he kicked two 50-yard field goals. Wersching’s longest kick this year is a 42-yarder.

“Mark has a real strong leg,” Ocean View Coach Howard Isom said. “Unfortunately, we haven’t been in situations where he’s gotten to try a field goal. He’s a real fine linebacker with a great future.

“He’s only 16 and he’s already 6 feet, 200 pounds, so he’s going to get bigger. I think he has a future as a college linebacker, or he could go the route of a Pat McInally or Norm Johnson and become a kicker in college.”
