OXNARD : Educators Review New Curriculum

Share

Teachers and administrators in the Oxnard Elementary School District took the day off from class Friday to review a new social studies curriculum that puts an increased focus on the history of minorities.

Workshops educating teachers on recently purchased textbooks and other materials followed an address from state Sen. Gary Hart (D-Santa Barbara), who said immigration into the state from an array of cultures has changed the ethnic makeup of schools.

“We have to realize that we are talking about the whole human family,” said Hart, chairman of the Senate education committee. “The tremendous challenge is framing a curriculum that will be meaningful to a diverse group of children.”

About 500 teachers in the 16-school district attended the instructional services program, breaking off into groups at various schools.

There are about 12,000 students in the district.
