Article Strikes Out

Jack Mathews’ Oct. 13 article on studio chiefs (“Three Strikes--You’re In!”) is poorly researched and draws an outrageous conclusion about the talent of Mark Canton as a studio head.

During my six years at Warner Bros. as a production vice president working with Canton, I was either involved in or witnessed the production of such films as “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Dangerous Liaisons,” “Lethal Weapon,” “The Accidental Tourist” and “The Witches of Eastwick.”

These and many others contributed to Warner Bros. being the No. 1 studio four of the 11 years that Canton was at the studio.

None of the above films would have been made without his expertise, leadership and choice. To cite “Batman” and “Bonfire of the Vanities” as his contribution to the film industry while excluding other films, and then attack his ability on the basis of the latter, is inexcusably irresponsible.
