Rep. Bill Lowery (R-San Diego) announced Saturday that the drug-abuse prevention program of the San Diego Police Department will receive a $500,000 federal grant to help fund educational programs for underprivileged children.

“I believe the key to stopping the drug problem in San Diego is a partnership between law enforcement interdiction efforts and reduction through education programs,” Lowery said in a ceremony at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.

The funds are earmarked for the police program called Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or D.A.R.E., and may be used to fund a summer camp for inner-city youth that focuses on drug-abuse prevention.

Lowery said the money will come from a special discretionary grant program included in a funding bill that cleared Congress on Oct. 3 and is awaiting President Bush’s signature.

Once the president signs the bill, the funds will be available to D.A.R.E. during the first half of the 1992 fiscal year.
