Two young children who were asleep in the back of a car that was stolen were dropped off in good condition at the front door of their great-grandmother’s house in Compton early Monday, police said.

The 4-year-old girl and 5-year-old boy, who had been missing since the car was stolen about 8:20 p.m. Sunday, were left at their great-grandmother’s house shortly after 4:15 a.m. by someone who knocked on the door and then disappeared. “We’re still investigating how they got there,” said Sgt. John Garrett, adding that the stolen 1983 Oldsmobile Cutlass was still missing.

The children--whose names were withheld, along with the great-grandmother’s--were examined at a hospital and found to be in good condition. The car was stolen after the children’s baby-sitter parked the vehicle and left the children asleep while she went into a house, Garrett said.
