San Diego police apprehended a suspect in a bank robbery Tuesday who, at 5-foot-9 and 250 pounds, engaged officers in a brief but futile footrace before being arrested and having his loaded gun confiscated.

The man walked into the Grossmont Bank in the 400 block of West Ash Street shortly after 11 a.m., and, armed with a .38-caliber handgun, demanded $694 from a teller, police said.

He then left the bank, pursued by two male employees, who flagged down two police officers. The officers caught up to James Beardsley, 32, after a brief sprint.

The officers arrested Beardsley and took a loaded gun and money from him in the 1300 block of 1st Avenue, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

Beardsley was later interviewed by the FBI and held in the Metropolitan Correctional Center.

Robinson said Beardsley is not believed to “the Jock,” a serial bank robber who remains at large.
