Construction of a new $11-million Rose Bowl press box, complete with sky boxes and 1,200 luxury seats, will begin the day after the annual Rose Bowl football game, officials from the city and the Tournament of Roses announced Tuesday.

The glass-enclosed, three-story press box, which will stretch from goal post to goal post on the western edge of the stadium, is expected to position the Rose Bowl as a venue for such major events as the Super Bowl and the World Cup Finals.

“It will be one of the most modern press boxes in the United States,” said Harriman Cronk, chairman of the Tournament of Roses football committee.

Super Bowl XXVII, in January, 1993, is already scheduled for the stadium and the city is a finalist among contenders for the championship matches of the quadrennial World Cup soccer competition.

Mardian Construction of Phoenix will be the prime contractor.
