San Diego police confiscated more than $4,000 and two television sets from a synagogue that was allegedly operating an illegal gambling operation, officials said.

Officers from the Police Department’s licensing division on Tuesday closed down the combination bingo and lotto game at Tifereth Israel Synagogue in the 6600 block of Cowels Mountain Boulevard, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

Police said it is illegal to operate a combination of lotto and bingo in the same game.

Theresa Foreman, 67, who was running the game, was issued a misdemeanor citation, Robinson said.

Also seized were 171 bingo cards and tickets. The raid followed an Oct. 3 letter that was sent to all bingo operators in San Diego that informed them of legal and illegal games, Robinson said.
