A judge Wednesday ordered a Point Loma man who admitted strangling his 82-year-old wife to take further psychiatric tests before he is sentenced.

Wilmore McDowell, 59, earlier pleaded guilty to second- degree murder in the July 30, 1990, death of his wife, Lucienne McDowell, who was found slain in their home in the 3600 block of Warner Street.

McDowell had pleaded innocent by reason of insanity and both prosecuting and defense attorneys reached an agreement that McDowell was insane at the time of the slaying.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Ron Mendes said McDowell will probably be committed to a state mental hospital, possibly for life.

San Diego Superior Court Judge William Howatt rescheduled sentencing for Dec. 16. McDowell remains in County Jail.
