Tom Kelly of the Minnesota Twins was named American League manager of the year by the Baseball Writers Assn. of America.
Kelly received 27 of a possible 28 first-place votes and finished with 138 points. Detroit Tiger Manager Sparky Anderson, who received the other first-place vote, was second with 50 points, and the Toronto Blue Jays’ Cito Gaston was third with 17.
