The body of a 6-month-old boy was found in a Pala house after a fire in which rescue efforts by the child’s parents and firefighters failed, officials said.

Firefighters found the body of Cody Leano at 1:15 a.m. Friday in the living room of a house in the 37875 block of Pala Temecula Road. The medical examiner’s office is conducting an autopsy. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Gill Leano and Willow Diaz, the baby’s parents, told fire officials that they tried to rescue the child but were prevented by flames, said Detective Rick Empson of the sheriff’s Arson and Explosive Unit. The heat and flames also kept firefighters from reaching the baby.

The blaze began at 9 p.m. Thursday and took firefighters from the Pala Fire Department, the California Department of Forestry and the North County Fire Protection District about three hours to contain, Empson said.

The fire destroyed the one-story house and a storage shed, causing an estimated $100,000 in damage.
