Fifth Mexican Fruit Fly of Year Found in County

An adult male Mexican fruit fly has been trapped in Maywood, bringing to five the number of Mexflies discovered this year in Los Angeles County, agricultural officials said Wednesday.

The crop-destroying pest was trapped Tuesday in an orange tree in the 4300 block of 61st Street. It was the first discovery of a Mexfly in the county since Sept. 11, when an adult male was trapped in the 3100 block of 113th Street in Hawthorne, officials said. Mexflies have also been trapped this year in Hacienda Heights, City Terrace and Lennox. Leon Spaugy, county agricultural commissioner, said additional traps will be placed in the Maywood neighborhood, but no eradication measures are planned.

The discovery came a day after agricultural officials trapped a 10th Mediterranean fruit fly--another crop-destroying pest--in Los Angeles County.
