Santa Monica : Beach Property Open House

Share

Santa Monica’s Department of Cultural and Recreation Services is sponsoring an open house at the former Sand and Sea Club property at 415 Pacific Coast Highway to show off its renovations and inaugurate the spot for public use.

The property was earmarked for a luxury hotel and community center, but Santa Monica voters rejected that plan a year ago. Recently, restaurateur Michael McCarty, the developer of the proposed hotel, prevailed on the Legislature to approve an amendment that would have removed the property from the city’s control. The property is owned by the state but managed by Santa Monica under a long-term lease.

Gov. Pete Wilson, however, vetoed the state park funding measure containing the amendment.

Saturday’s open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. will feature tours, music and food, priced from $4 to $7. People may also bring picnic lunches.

The facility was once called “Ocean House,” and for a time was the largest beach residence on the West Coast. It was built for actress Marion Davies by William Randolph Hearst. A photo exhibition of its history will be on display.

Free shuttle van service will be available from the Senior Recreation Center at 1450 Ocean Ave. Call (310) 458-8310 for more information.
