Dating ‘Redwood’

With regard to Chris Pasles’ observation that the New Grove Dictionary of American Music gives 1971 as the date for Paul Chihara’s “Redwood,” instead of 1967 that was listed in our concert program (“Southwest Chamber Group at Chapman,” Calendar, Oct. 28):

The composer’s manuscript gives the completion date as 1967. It is common for the composer to place the date of completion at the end of each work. Grove’s may have been referring to the date of publication, which often is later.
