The San Jose Sharks suffered through an entire month without an NHL victory.

But the expansion team celebrated the anniversary of its single triumph--and ended a 13-game losing streak--by beating the Edmonton Oilers, 6-2, Friday night at San Francisco.

Paul Fenton scored two goals and goalie Arturs Irbe stopped 30 of 32 shots for the Sharks, who had not won since beating Calgary, 4-3, in their third game of the season on Oct. 8.

“Some of the things we’ve been looking for to happen the last month finally happened tonight,” defenseman Neil Wilkinson said. “(The first 10 minutes) was the most emotional stretch of hockey we’ve played.”

The Sharks won their second game by dominating the first period when they took a 4-1 lead and outshot the Oilers, 19-6.

Dean Evason, David Bruce and Wayne Presley also scored goals for the Sharks, who had their most productive offensive night of the season.

Pittsburgh 3, Winnipeg 1--Paul Coffey scored in the second period at Winnipeg to break the NHL record for career goals by a defenseman.

The goal was the 311th of Coffey’s NHL career, breaking the record of 310 held by former New York Islander Denis Potvin.

Coffey, in his 12th NHL season and fifth with the Penguins, broke Potvin’s records for most points and assists Oct. 17.

New Jersey 3, Montreal 2--Former Canadien Stephane Richer scored two goals at East Rutherford, N.J., as the Devils ended Montreal’s nine-game winning streak.

The defeat was the first for the Canadiens since a 3-1 loss to Buffalo on Oct. 18.

Detroit 5, Washington 4--Bob Probert’s second goal of the game with 10:27 left at Landover, Md., lifted the Red Wings to their first victory against the Capitals in nearly three years.

Toronto 3, N.Y. Rangers 3--Mike Bullard scored with 30 seconds left in regulation to give the Maple Leafs the tie at New York.

“I liked a lot of things about our game tonight,” Toronto Coach Tom Watt said. “We came from behind three times, Jeff Reese (goalie, 40 saves) had a strong game and we got our first road point. It’s about time we established that.”

Buffalo 4, Philadelphia 3--Donald Audette scored at 1:29 of overtime at Buffalo as the Sabres ended a four-game losing streak with the victory over the Flyers.
