Seventh-ranked California, playing without running back Russell White for most of the game, scored a 27-14 victory over Oregon State on Saturday.

“That was our worst game of the year,” the Bears’ Brian Treggs said. “We came in knowing they were 0-8 and thinking there was no way they could beat us.

“We thought it was going to be a cakewalk. You can’t give Oregon State all the credit. It’s not like they played exceptionally well. We played terrible.”

Cal Coach Bruce Snyder was more generous toward the Beavers.

“Oregon State does a couple of things that can make it tough for a team,” he said. “They play hard and eat so much time off the clock, and that’s where it hurt us today.”

The Beavers had the ball for nearly 41 minutes.

“That’s the best that we’ve done all year of playing hard and playing well,” Oregon State Coach Jerry Pettibone said, “and against the seventh-ranked team in the nation.”

Linsdey Chapman, playing in place of White, rushed for two touchdowns as the Bears moved to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the Pac-10.

White suffered a bruised thigh when he fumbled early in the first quarter. Snyder was unsure how serious the injury was, saying only that “it was serious enough that he didn’t play anymore.”

Chapman, a sophomore, carried 18 times for 110 yards in White’s absence, including touchdown runs of two and 13 yards.

Ian Shields ran for one touchdown and passed for another for the Beavers (0-9, 0-6) before 20,798 at Parker Stadium.

“We were flat and they played hard,” Cal linebacker Mike Barsala said. “They played as hard as anyone we have played all year.”
