Roman Anderson became the first player in NCAA history to score more than 400 points when he kicked a 32-yard field goal with 4:23 left to help Houston beat Texas, 23-14, Saturday in a Southwest Conference game at Houston.

Anderson, who missed an extra point in the first quarter that ended a streak of 136 conversions, holds the NCAA scoring record with 403 points.

Houston improved to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the SWC.

Texas’ defense harassed Houston quarterback David Klingler with four sacks and an interception, but he rallied the Cougars with three key completions to Marcus Grant to set up Anderson’s kick for a 16-14 lead.

After the go-ahead field goal, Kevin Batiste intercepted a pass by Texas’ Peter Gardere, setting up a one-yard touchdown run by Klingler with 14 seconds left.

Before the late turnaround, Texas linebacker Boone Powell recovered two fumbles that produced 10 points and gave the Longhorns (4-4, 3-2) a 14-13 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Rice 31, Southern Methodist 10--Trevor Cobb, the nation’s second leading rusher, scored two touchdowns and ran for 203 yards at Dallas as the Owls handed SMU its 24th consecutive SWC loss.

It was the eighth time in nine games, and the 15th time in his career, that Cobb rushed for more than 100 yards. Cobb, who carried 41 times, has four 200 yard games. He was averaging 154.5 yards per game.

SMU (1-8, 0-7) tried a psychological ploy by wearing red jerseys for the first time since 1978, but it still couldn’t bring the Mustangs their first SWC victory since 1986.

Rice (4-5, 2-4) built a 17-3 halftime lead on an offense based around Cobb, who ran 13 yards to help position the Owls for Darrell Richardson’s 43-yard field goal.

Cobb was active on a 83-yard, 15-play drive that he capped with a six-yard scoring run.

The 180-pound junior from Pasadena, Tex., highlighted a 68-yard scoring drive with a 24-yard run as Josh LaRocca sneaked over from a yard out.

SMU’s Cary Brabham intercepted a pass by LaRocca and returned it 27 yards to the Owls’ 13-yard line to set up a six-yard scoring run by Rongea Hill in the third quarter.

But LaRocca scored on a 29-yard run and Cobb scored from two yards out to put the Mustangs away.

Texas Tech 38, Arkansas 21--Robert Hall threw for one touchdown and rushed for another in a SWC game at Lubbock, Tex., as the Red Raiders defeated Arkansas for their first home victory over the Razorbacks since 1966.

Texas Tech (4-5, 3-3) gained momentum midway through the first quarter when Steve Carr broke through Arkansas’ line and smothered Pete Raether’s punt. Shawn Jackson recovered for the Red Raiders at the Razorbacks’ 40. Six plays later, Hall passed to Rodney Blackshear on a nine-yard scoring play to give Texas Tech a 10-0 lead.

Southeastern Conference-bound Arkansas is 5-4 and 4-2.
