Authorities conducted an air and sea search for a Navy SEAL diver who reportedly disappeared during a recreational dive off La Jolla, Navy officials said.

David Billings, a member of the Navy’s SEAL Team III, was reported missing Sunday by his wife when he failed to return from a night dive in the La Jolla area. His vehicle was found in the 300 block of Marina Avenue.

“The vehicle was found at that address in La Jolla and that’s where we began the search--in the nearby waters,” said Cmdr. Robert Pritchard, a Navy spokesman.

The Navy conducted a search throughout the day, aided by the Coast Guard, which used a helicopter and several patrol boats. The search was called off at dusk. Pritchard said Navy divers would resume the search Monday. “He is a qualified diver with some years of experience,” Pritchard said.

Authorities did not know if any other divers had accompanied Billings.
