West Covina : Fire Chief to Retire

Share

Fire Chief Robert E. McClelland will retire Dec. 1 after almost 13 years at the helm of the city’s Fire Department.

On Tuesday, City Manager Jim Starbird asked the council to hire an executive search firm to find a replacement. The council unanimously voted to pay Ralph Anderson & Associates no more than $8,000 for the task.

A new fire chief will most likely be appointed in March, Starbird said after the council meeting. An interim fire chief will be named before Dec.1, he said.

McClelland, 52, said he decided to leave after he reached the 30-year career mark July 30. He began as a firefighter in Costa Mesa in July, 1961, rising to battalion chief 12 years later. He was selected fire chief in West Covina in 1979.
