Man Sent to Prison in Attack on UAW Official

A laid-off Pacoima auto worker was sentenced to two years in state prison Wednesday for stabbing the president of his United Auto Workers local in Van Nuys in a dispute over pension benefits.

Samuel Mines, 32, was convicted last month in Van Nuys Superior Court in the June 26 stabbing of Jerry Shrieves, 50, president of UAW Local 645, which represents workers at the Van Nuys General Motors plant.

Shrieves, stabbed in the chest, was treated and released from a hospital the day of the attack.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Richard F. Walmark said Mines became enraged when union officials refused to return his pension contributions, a practice done “only in rare emergencies” for those less than 59 years of age.

Judge Judith M. Ashmann, in imposing the prison term, noted that Mines was convicted in 1989 of misdemeanor weapons possession.
