A gang of robbers cleaned out a jewelry store in the Westside Pavilion shopping mall in West Los Angeles, making off in a flurry of bullets with about $300,000 worth of gems and precious stones, police said Thursday.

According to witnesses, a pair of lookouts loitered outside the De Kara jewelry store as two armed men held the owners, brothers Krikor and Setrag Karadolian, at gunpoint Wednesday evening while they shoveled the loot into a plastic bag held by another suspect.

One of the robbers pistol-whipped Krikor Karadolian, opening a two-inch gash on his head. His brother produced a pistol and exchanged several shots with the robbers as they fled, said Los Angeles Police Lt. Ron Hall.

Fifteen minutes later, Terry Ware, 25, of West Los Angeles, arrived at the nearby UCLA Medical Center with a bullet wound in the back. He was arrested after the owners of the store identified him as one of the robbers.
