ORANGE : Seniors Will Work With Young Readers
A federal library grant authorized by the City Council this week will fund a program to recruit senior citizen volunteers to work with young readers.
The Grandparents and Books program will be funded with $5,000 in federal Library Services and Construction Act funds. The money will pay for new books, publicity and informational publications, and materials to be used during storytelling.
The program will recruit seniors to read to children individually and in small groups at city and school libraries, community centers and other locations.
“With the number of active senior citizens in the Orange community and the need to provide attention to children’s reading success and enjoyment, we feel this program will be a great community benefit,” library director Karen Leo said in a memo to the council.
The City Council this week also approved using a $4,000 federal library grant to purchase Spanish language materials for the El Modena branch library and a $29,910 federal library grant for the final year of funding for the Friendly Stop program, a library satellite serving primarily Latino teen-agers in the Cypress/Lemon Street barrio.
