UCSD Opens Volleyball Playoffs with Victory

Liz Vesanovic had 13 kills and Vikki Van Duyne added 12 to key UC San Diego’s 15-7, 15-7, 15-13 victory over Cortland State in the first round of the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional at Rochester Institute of Technology.

The top-ranked Tritons (24-5) will face SUNY-Stony Brook in today’s regional final.

Dana Sione led the Tritons’ defensive effort with 10 digs. Setter Julie Fabian had 39 assists.

San Diego State got 22 kills and 10 digs from Gracie Schutt, but lost to New Mexico, 15-13, 12-15, 15-6, 15-5, in a Western Athletic Conference match at Peterson Gym. Shannon Matthew added 19 kills and Jennifer Miller 14 for the Aztecs.

The University of San Diego lost to Loyola Marymount, 15-12, 15-10, 12-15, 15-7, and fell out of third place in the West Coast Conference. The Toreras, who received 16 kills from Jennifer Lofftus, fell to 17-12, 7-6. Loyola is 16-12, 8-6.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

University of San Diego teammates Julie McKeon and Laura Richards will meet this morning in the semifinals of the women’s Rolex ITCA tournament at UC Irvine. Richards advanced by defeating Nina Eriksson of Pepperdine, 6-4, 6-0, in the third round and Debbie Goldberger of UC Santa Barbara, 6-3, 7-5. McKeon, seeded sixth, downed Jane Yates of Arizona, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, in the third round and Eva Oliverez of SDSU, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarters.

Three local teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles tournament: Sue Hawke and Nicole Storto of SDSU and Karen Lauer and Laura Mannisto and McKeon and Richards of USD.

MEN’S TENNIS

Kevin Bradley of USD upset Texas Christian’s Luis Ruette, second-seeded and ranked eighth in the NCAA, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, in the second round of the America West Challenge Cup at Rice University in Houston. Bradley defeated Chris Ainsworth of Southern Methodist in the first round, 6-3, 6-2.

Bradley’s teammate Phil Hoffman lost to top-seeded Steve Campbell of Rice, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, in the second round after defeating Oscar Ochoa of Texas Arlington, 7-6, 6-0.

BASEBALL

Padresfest, which had been scheduled for later this month, has been postponed. It will instead be part of Fanfest next summer, which will be held in connection with the 1992 All-Star game.
