San Fernando police arrested a 35-year-old Sylmar man on suspicion of theft Saturday after witnesses said they saw him loading computers into his car near a bank.

The man, whose name was not released, also is being questioned in connection with numerous bank burglaries countywide, said Detective Robert Ordelheide.

Witnesses using an automated teller saw a man take two computers from the Bank of America, 120 S. Brand Blvd., shortly after 3 a.m. and called police, Ordelheide said.

Witnesses provided police with the license number of the man’s car and the man was arrested about half an hour later near his home, police said.

The computers were not in his car, but police later recovered $22,000 worth of computer equipment, identified as being from the Bank of America, at the man’s residence, detectives said.

Ordelheide said Saturday’s incident was the third bank computer theft in the northeastern San Fernando Valley area this month. Fifty-three other such incidents, which occurred in recent months throughout Los Angeles County, also are under investigation, he said.
