Four Suspects in ‘Mall Murders’ to Be Arraigned

Four suspects accused of five San Gabriel Valley kidnapings and slayings dubbed the “mall murders” are expected to be arraigned in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday and a trial date set after indictments by the Los Angeles County grand jury are unsealed.

The four--John Lewis, Vincent Hubbard, Eileen Huber and Robin Machuca--are accused of a summer crime spree from July 5 through Aug. 27. Some victims were kidnaped from shopping malls and others were forced to withdraw money from automatic bank teller machines.

The suspects are also accused of the robbery and kidnaping of a sixth victim, who survived. The four were to have faced a preliminary hearing Dec. 2. Using the grand jury saves the county time and money involved in a lengthy preliminary hearing in Municipal Court, county officials said. The move also avoids cross-examination by defense attorneys.
