Navratilova Overcomes Challenge in New York

Fourth-seeded Martina Navratilova held off an upset bid by Lori McNeil and won her opening-round match, 6-4, 7-5, at the Virginia Slims Championships at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Steffi Graf, seeded second, beat Conchita Martinez of Spain, 6-0, 6-3.
The first round continues through tonight and Wednesday and the tournament winds up Sunday with a best-of-five final.
