Astros’ Pitcher Scott Decides to Retire
Mike Scott, who led Houston to the National League West title in 1986, told the Astros on Wednesday that he will retire.
Scott, 36, had surgery last winter on his right shoulder. This year, he was 0-2 with a 12.86 earned-run average in seven innings, then went on the disabled list.
Scott, who made $2,337,500 last season, was eligible to file for free agency but did not.
Scott, a resident of Laguna Hills, could not be reached for comment Wednesday but after being honored Sept. 25 at the Astrodome, he said his pitching days were over.
“The timing on this is good,” Scott said. “I got to throw my last pitch as an Astro, and that’s good, too. I would need an operation on my shoulder and be out a year and a half with little guarantees.”
