Sewage Spills Into S.D. River, Signs Posted at Dog Beach
Signs warning of sewage contamination have been posted at Dog Beach where the San Diego River empties into the ocean after sewage was found spilling into the river near the intersection of Interstate 8 and California 163.
The sewage leak, which was discovered Friday, apparently was caused by a blocked sewer pipe, which caused sewage to overflow into a storm drain that empties into the San Diego River, a county health services spokesman said.
The spokesman said that it is not known when the spill began or how much sewage has spilled into the river. County public works crews began repairs Friday to halt the flow, which measured 3 to 5 gallons a minute.
The warning signs will remain at the river mouth until tests show that the water is safe for recreational use, the spokesman said.
