A Guide to the Best of Southern California : DESIGN : A Rough Exterior

When it comes to menorahs, the selection leans toward ultra-traditional designs, which may seem out of place amid, say, Italian interiors.

But architect and craftsman Aaron Rosenberg has a different take on the standard silver and brass candelabra used by Jewish celebrants during the Hanukkah festivities that begin Dec. 2 this year. His pieces are crafted with the help of a cement mixer in the basement of his Oakland residence, where he also produces concrete sculptures and clocks under the name YoClockface. The menorahs, about $40 each at Emerald Forest in Studio City, would look as much at home in a cave dwelling as they do in most Post-Modern homes.

Although the stands’ stone exteriors may be in vogue now, the religious symbols Rosenberg etches into them are deeply rooted in his faith. “I’m pretty secular, really,” he says, “but like other Jews I still follow and practice Hanukkah. These are for people who want to celebrate tradition in a funky way.”
