El Monte : Recycling Program Delayed

The City Council delayed action Tuesday on an ordinance to implement state-mandated waste reduction and recycling in the city, a program that will mean higher costs for residents.
If approved, a portion of the cost will be charged to 15 local waste-hauling companies for each dwelling unit they service. Part of that fee will be passed on to residents.
The El Monte Source Reduction and Recycling Element is a response to 1989 legislation requiring local agencies to reduce the waste being sent to burgeoning landfills.
City Administrator Gregory D. Korduner said the program will cost residents about 13 cents a month, significantly less than in some other San Gabriel Valley cities, where the cost to residents is expected to be as high as $1 a month.
Council members extended a public hearing on the program until Dec. 10.
