Cerritos and Lakewood have earned special citations for pedestrian safety in the American Automobile Assn.’s 1991 Pedestrian Protection Program, which is coordinated locally by the Automobile Club of Southern California. The cities were among 207 American cities with populations of 50,000 to 100,000 that competed for honors.

The award to Cerritos was presented at a recent City Council meeting. Lakewood received its citation Tuesday during the Lakewood Celebrates ceremony.

Cerritos was cited for having no pedestrian fatalities during 1990, compared to the group average in its population category of two deaths. Honors went to Lakewood for such things as its pedestrian safety program, pedestrian control laws, traffic engineering and school traffic safety.
