Share

Sunday will mark the fourth annual observance of World AIDS Day, and a multicultural, interfaith program is planned at the UCI Student Center.

The AIDS Ministry and Ecumenical Network (AMEN) and AIDS Coalition to Identify Orange County Needs (ACTION) are sponsoring the event. The theme is “Diversity of Culture . . . Unity in Spirit.”

The goal of the program, which runs from 4 to 6 p.m., is to bring together people whose lives have been affected by the AIDS virus and increase awareness of the disease in Orange County.

More than 150 nations throughout the world, including the United States, have designated Sunday as World AIDS Day. UCI’s event is just one of many activities around the world aimed at increasing awareness and reinforcing AIDS prevention activities.

The Rev. Warren Pittman of AMEN said he thinks it is important that the religious community provide a caring voice to those suffering from AIDS. Since World AIDS Day falls on a Sunday this year, it seemed the opportune time for religious leaders to get involved, said Pittman, pastor of St. Anselm’s Episcopal Church in Garden Grove.

Sunday’s program will include brief presentations by clergy from the Buddhist, Jewish, Roman Catholic, Religious Science and Anglican/Protestant faiths.

Participants are encouraged to bring canned fruit or soup, which will be distributed through local AIDS organizations. For more information, call (714) 834-8798.
