Capping the University of San Diego’s finest season ever, Nikki Wallace, the sophomore middle blocker for the Toreras’ volleyball team, has been named to the All-West Coast Conference first team. Wallace was a second team member last year as well as the WCC’s freshman of the year.

This season’s freshman of the year went to USD’s Jennifer Lofftus, an outside hitter. USD’s Amy McMahon joined Lofftus as an all-freshman selection.

USD, 18-14 overall, finished fourth in the WCC at 7-7.

San Pasqual senior Matt Suttie, a 6-foot-6 middle blocker, has signed a letter of intent with Long Beach State. Suttie also considered USC, Pepperdine, Stanford, UC Santa Barbara and Ohio State. He plays for Seaside Volleyball Club.

PADRES

The Padres have named Keith Champion manager of the Class A Waterloo Diamonds of the Midwest League. Champion, 32, spent the last 10 years as a player, coach and manager in the St. Louis Cardinals’ farm system. His most recent job was as manager of the Cardinals’ Arizona Rookie League team in Peoria. In 1987, he was a coach at Class AA Arkansas of the Texas League for manager Jim Riggleman, now the manager for the Padres’ Class AAA affiliate in Las Vegas.

FOOTBALL

Lincoln Kennedy, a former Morse High standout, added to his postseason honors, being named one winner of the Morris Trophy, annually given to the Pacific 10 Conference’s outstanding linemen. Kennedy of Washington was honored as the top offensive lineman; Husky teammate Steve Emtman earned the defensive honor.
