COUNTYWIDE : Red Cross Seeks to Raise $30,000

Local Red Cross officials are trying to raise $30,000 after an unexpected rash of fires depleted the emergency relief funds that were budgeted for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1992, an official said Tuesday.

The Red Cross has already given local disaster assistance totaling $45,669, said Brian E. Bolton, executive director of the Ventura County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The average aid total for the past five years was only $34,000, Bolton said, and that is the amount officials had budgeted for this year.

In November, the Red Cross responded to nine residential disasters involving 32 people and gave $11,438 worth of assistance, Bolton said.

Typical forms of aid include emergency housing for fire victims, assistance in finding replacement clothes and furniture and food grants.

“We did not expect that we would be going over the budget like this so soon,” Bolton said.

“We intend to be there for victims of disaster, and I think we are going to do everything we can to ensure that we continue playing that role in the future,” he said, adding that several fund-raisers are being planned for the coming weeks.

Donations should be sent to the American Red Cross, Ventura County Chapter, P.O. Box 25660, Ventura 93002-5660.
