Georgetown Coach John Thompson had a word of advice for star center Alonzo Mourning after the 17th-ranked Hoyas’ 101-76 victory over Hawaii Loa--get used to being tired.

Mourning scored 24 points, had 10 rebounds and blocked four shots as the Hoyas (1-0) opened their season Wednesday night at Honolulu.

Thompson said it’s not surprising that Mourning would be tired after his first game, adding it’s something he will have to deal with now that Dikembe Mutombo is in the NBA.

“It’s hot and humid. Alonzo was tired, but he’ll be tired this season because he’ll be double- and triple-teamed,” Thompson said.

What Thompson hopes is that some of his freshmen will provide help for Mourning, and to that end the coach was pleased with the play of his newcomers.

Kevin Millen came off the bench to score 14 points, 12 during a 17-8 run that extended Georgetown’s 60-56 lead to 77-64 with 6:51 left. Another freshman, Jack Jacques, added 10 points.

Hawaii Loa (3-2), an NAIA school, was led by Roger Huggins, who scored 21 points. The Mongoose fell out of contention after Huggins and two others went to the bench with four fouls each within a two-minute span of the second half. Soon after, the Hoyas went on their 17-8 run to take command.

Marquette 78, Northern Illinois 71--The Warriors withstood a late charge by the Huskies and overcame some poor second-half free-throw shooting to win the nonconference game at Milwaukee.

Northern (0-2) used a 15-4 run featuring a trapping defense, a three-point basket by Brian Molis and five missed free throws in a row by Marquette to pull to within 71-66 with 2:50 left. But Robb Logterman then made three consecutive free throws for Marquette (2-0).
