Quarterback Jason Sharkey ran for a touchdown, threw for another and kicked three extra points to propel Calvary Chapel to a 27-14 victory over Trona High in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division X playoffs Friday night in front of 1,125 at Westminster High.

The Eagles (10-1) will face Village Christian Friday in the semifinals.

Sharkey, who completed only three passes and was intercepted twice, opened the Eagle scoring in the second quarter on a quarterback sneak after teammate Danny Neumann returned an interception 15 yards to the one-yard line.

As time expired in the first half, Trona quarterback Randy Storts lateraled to Vaughn Kerkhoff, but the ball bounced before Kerkhoff could catch it. Eagle Sabe Younger picked up the ball and ran 41 yards for a touchdown.

On the opening kickoff of the third quarter, Eagle Matt Kellogg fumbled then recovered the ball, and ran 75 yards for a touchdown. Kellogg, the game’s leading rusher, had 208 yards in 24 carries.

Trona (10-2) did not score until 7 minutes 45 seconds remained in the third quarter, when Chris Leape ran in from the six. But Calvary Chapel answered 35 seconds later when Sharkey completed his longest pass of the evening, 19 yards to Neumann, for the Eagles’ final touchdown.

Trona scored again on its first possession of the fourth quarter, as Kerkhoff ran in from three yards out and then ran for the two-point conversion.
