Son, 25, Convicted of Murdering Parents
A Valinda man has been convicted of murdering his parents after a Pomona Superior Court jury deliberated for 2 1/2 days.
De’Ondre Staten, 25, was found guilty late Monday of the Oct. 13, 1990, murder of Faye Staten, 43, who was stabbed 18 times, and Arthur Staten, 44, who was shot in the head. The couple, who owned a beauty salon and supply store, were slain minutes after they arrived home from a trip to Egypt to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Gary Hearnsberger argued that Staten, who lived with his parents, killed them to receive $303,000 from their life insurance policies and then altered the scene to make the crime resemble a gang killing.
The jury will hear testimony today to help them decide whether Staten should receive the death penalty.
