ROUNDUP : Stifling Defense Lifts Ventura College to Final, 89-62
The Ventura College men’s basketball team played nearly flawless defense in the first half, hounding Pasadena City into 15 turnovers and limiting the Lancers to eight-of-23 shooting, to pave the way for an 89-62 victory Thursday in a championship semifinal of the Moorpark tournament.
The Pirates (8-1) will play Compton in the championship game at 8 tonight.
Ventura, which led, 43-23, at intermission, was so dominant on defense that Pasadena (6-3) committed nine turnovers on its first 15 possessions and fell behind, 17-5.
In another Moorpark tournament game:
Rio Hondo 68, Moorpark 53--Jimmy Galbert scored 21 points for Moorpark, but that was not enough to offset 27 turnovers by the Raiders (2-6). Rio Hondo (2-3) turned 11 of those turnovers into 23 points.
